I AM ME!
A program fostering healthy self-esteem & body image
while preventing eating disorders
80% of all eating disorder cases develop during adolescence.
According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), 11% of high school students in
the United States have been diagnosed with an eating disorder.
Eating disorders are rampant in our society, yet adequate prevention programs do not exist. Over the years schools
and communities have implemented programs aimed at preventing drug & alcohol abuse abuse. On the other
hand, very few schools or community organizations have programs on education and prevention of eating disorders.
Beyond the Mirror is an organization that
counsels and educates individuals who are experiencing struggles with food, body image & disordered eating. This includes
individuals who are struggling with: recreational eating, emotional eating, binge eating, compulsive over-eating, body image
issues and eating disorders (anorexia & bulimia). Individual & group counseling services are available to all individuals
& sliding fees are available to those who need them.
Beyond the Mirror
has given presentations, workshops & staff-trainings all over Northern Colorado. We have presented at Schools, Hospitals,
Community Organizations, Colleges, Mental Health centers & Conferences.
Description of Programs:
All
presentations are interactive. The students view a creative PowerPoint presentation, and in smaller settings, participate
in a craft to promote positive self-image.
Students learn:
·
Media’s influence & cultural obsession
with slenderness as a physical, psychological & moral issue
· Roles of men & women in our society
·
Development of people’s self-esteem
& self-respect in a variety of areas (school, work, community service, hobbies) that transcend physical appearance
·
Nutrition education regarding a healthy
diet
·
Early detection & intervention
