Not Sure if You Need Support?

Many people wonder if what they’re experiencing “counts” as an eating concern. The truth is, eating issues can show up in many different ways — and they are not always about weight or appearance. If food, eating, or body image is causing stress, guilt, or disruption in your life, it may be worth talking with a professional.

Some common signs you may benefit from counseling for eating concerns include:

  • Skipping meals, restricting food, or avoiding certain foods even when hungry

  • Episodes of overeating, bingeing, or feeling out of control with food

  • Intense fear of gaining weight or frequent negative thoughts about body size/shape

  • Rigid food rules or rituals around eating

  • Anxiety when eating in social situations

  • Using food (or lack of food) to cope with difficult emotions

ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) is another eating disorder that’s becoming more recognized. Unlike anorexia or bulimia, ARFID isn’t about weight or body image. Instead, it often looks like extreme food selectivity, fear of certain textures, choking, or vomiting, or avoidance of whole food groups. ARFID is common in individuals with allergies, sensory sensitivities, and those on the autism spectrum. It can lead to nutritional deficiencies, social isolation, and anxiety around meals.

If you notice any of these patterns — whether restricting, overeating, or struggling with food variety — you are not alone. Eating disorders come in many forms, and seeking help is a sign of strength. Our Fort Collins counselors provide compassionate, inclusive care both in person and through telehealth across Colorado, helping you find peace with food and confidence in yourself.
