The Reflection: You Do Not Have to Earn Rest

Sometimes we do not realize how tired we are until we finally stop.

We keep going because there is always something else to do. Another message to answer. Another person who needs us. Another task that feels important. Another reason to tell ourselves, “I’ll rest later.”

And sometimes later keeps getting pushed further away.

Rest can start to feel like something we have to earn.

Something we are only allowed to have once everything is finished.

But everything is almost never finished.

There will always be something else waiting.

WHAT IF REST DID NOT HAVE TO BE EARNED?

What if rest was simply part of being human?

Not a reward.

Not a sign that you are giving up.

Not proof that you are lazy.

Just something your body and mind need.

For some people, slowing down can even feel uncomfortable.

When we are used to being busy, productive, helpful, or responsible, stillness can feel unfamiliar. Sometimes it brings up guilt. Sometimes anxiety. Sometimes we notice how exhausted we actually are.

That does not mean you are doing rest wrong.

It may simply mean you have spent a long time learning to keep going.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO NOTICE WHAT YOU NEED

Maybe rest today looks like going to bed earlier.

Maybe it is sitting outside for ten minutes.

Maybe it is taking a walk without trying to accomplish anything.

Maybe it is leaving the laundry until tomorrow.

Maybe it is not answering the message right away.

Maybe it is doing absolutely nothing useful for a little while.

Rest does not have to look impressive to matter.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REACH YOUR BREAKING POINT FIRST

You are allowed to pause before you are completely overwhelmed.

You are allowed to care for yourself before your body forces you to.

You are allowed to notice that you are tired and respond to that.

Sometimes a gentler question is not:

“Have I done enough to deserve a break?”

It is:

“What do I need right now?”

That question can be a good place to begin.
