Supporting Children, Teens, and Families During the Transition Into Summer
As summer begins, many families find themselves shifting out of the structure of the school year and into a season that feels both exciting and overwhelming. The transition into summer can affect children, teens, parents, teachers, and caregivers in different ways as routines change, schedules become less predictable, and families work to find a new rhythm. While summer can bring more freedom, connection, and rest, it can also create stress for families trying to balance childcare, work schedules, summer activities, and emotional wellness.
At Beyond the Mirror Counseling & Wellness, we often see that children and adolescents benefit from a healthy balance of structure, flexibility, rest, movement, and meaningful connection during the summer months. Some kids struggle when schedules become too busy and overstimulating, while others feel anxious, disconnected, or unmotivated when there is not enough routine or purpose in their day. Mental health for children and teens is often supported not by perfection, but by balance.
For many families, summer can also highlight emotional exhaustion that has been building throughout the school year. Parents may feel pressure to create a “fun summer” while continuing to work, manage responsibilities, and support their children emotionally. Teachers, professors, and school staff are often transitioning out of months of constant output and adapting to a completely different pace. Even positive transitions can take emotional energy.
A few ways families can support emotional wellness during the summer include:
• Creating gentle routines while still allowing flexibility
• Encouraging movement, creativity, and outdoor time
• Giving children meaningful responsibilities to build confidence and self-esteem
• Allowing room for boredom, imagination, and rest
• Prioritizing connection over constant entertainment or productivity
• Supporting open conversations about emotions, stress, and changing routines
Summer does not have to be perfectly planned in order to be meaningful. Often, the healthiest seasons are the ones where families create enough structure to feel grounded and enough freedom to breathe. Sometimes children and parents alike simply need space to reconnect with themselves, with one another, and with what helps them feel most balanced and alive.
If your child, teen, or family is struggling with stress, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, ADHD, eating disorders, life transitions, or mental health concerns, our team at Beyond the Mirror Counseling & Wellness provides counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in Fort Collins and throughout Colorado through in-person and virtual therapy options
